Dublin Shoppers Encouraged to Get Crafty this Christmas...An initiative that encourages Dublin’s Christmas shoppers to buy Irish and support Irish craft makers has been launched by the Crafts Council of Ireland.

Craft for Christmas is a retail campaign spearheaded by the Crafts Council of Ireland that encourages consumers to support the €122 million Irish craft industry and the Irish economy as a whole by purchasing beautiful, individual Irish craft gifts this Christmas.

Ten Dublin retail outlets are involved in the initiative which will see the goods of 33 craftmakers highlighted in-store with special point-of-sale bearing the Crafts Council of Ireland logo and the tagline Exceptional Craft, Individual Gifts. The initiative includes crafted design gifts by internationally known brands such as Nicholas Mosse, Louis Mulcahy and Jerpoint Glass as well as contemporary crafted design makers like glassmaker Karl Harron and ceramicist Grainne Watts. Gift items in the Craft for Christmas initiative start at just €10, ensuring the retail drive is within everyone’s pocket range and covers a wide range of items from jewellery to pottery, ceramics, glassware, and textiles. The participating retail outlets are: The Kilkenny Shop; Designyard; Blarney Woollen Mills; House of Fraser; Arnott’s; Clery’s; Meadows & Byrne; Louis Mulcahy; Cleo and House of Ireland.

Craft for Christmas aims to support and foster the output of Irish craft makers and the Irish economy. Recent statistics issued by the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association (ISME) shows that up to €1billion is lost in the retail trade as a result of Irish people shopping elsewhere. However, every €10 spent on Irish products generates a further €24 in the economy in comparison with just €15 generated from the same amount spent on imported goods.

According to the Crafts Council of Ireland, craft is the perfect gift to purchase as the recession has affected retail trends. “After a decade of conspicuous consumption, branded bling has given way to crafted design and artisanship. People are now looking for something special and individual to give as a gift. The fantastic range of crafted design products available means the customer has the choice to buy beautiful gifts at a reasonable price which are unique and memorable”, said Úna Parsons, CEO, Crafts Council of Ireland.
