The Crafts Council of Ireland Proudly Introduces 'A New Generation of Ceramicists'. The graduates of the Crafts Council of Ireland’s acclaimed Ceramic Skills & Design Course will showcase their work at the Graduate Exhibition 2010 which takes place at the National Craft Gallery, Castle Yard, Kilkenny from 23rd – 30th July 2010.

Visitors to the National Craft Gallery will have the opportunity to admire and acquire the creative individual work of these talented new makers. The exhibition features contemporary craft in a variety of ceramic materials, from delicate paper-thin porcelain to robust stoneware, including Shona Flood’s porcelain wall mounted pieces inspired by John ffrench, Patrick Glavey’s contemporary reworking of folk pottery, and Liam Logue’s quirky pouring vessels based on containers made by journeymen metalworkers.

Education, training and development is at the core of the Crafts Council of Ireland’s activities and plays an integral part in building the next generation of craftmakers and skilling people for jobs in craft. “Our unique course allows students to gain the experience, knowledge and skill to develop a career in the craft sector where we see significant potential for growth. "Each graduate possesses an individual style and approach to clay and the exhibition reveals the talents of these up and coming ceramicists. The graduates should be very proud of what they have achieved over the last two years and I wish them every success as they embark on their future careers,”
explains Úna Parsons, Chief Executive, Crafts Council of Ireland.


The students are emerging from a two-year full time programme at the inspirational setting of Island Mill in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. Now in its nineteenth year, the course has established a national and international reputation for excellence. The intensive skill-based programme is designed to equip students passionate about working with clay with the practical skills and technical knowledge to develop careers in the ceramics industry. Previous graduates who have progressed to establishing their own businesses in Ireland include Karen Morgan, Colm de Rís and Rosemary Durr while those who have successful careers internationally include James Hake and Adam Buick in the United Kingdom, Kelian Atkins in France and Petra Schradi in Germany.

The Graduate Exhibition 2010 will be To conclude the week long exhibition, course director Gus Mabelson will enlighten guests with an informal tour of the exhibition from 6pm to 8pm on Friday 30th July, which forms part of a series of popular late night events on the last Friday of every month at the National Craft Gallery.
