The world-renowned skills of Irish master cutters and engravers is to be documented in a unique research study on the heritage of glassmaking in Ireland and will become the subject of a major exhibition in 2011, following the announcement of the Crafts Council of Ireland’s Irish Craft Bursary. Róisín de Buitléar is the recipient of a €15,000 Irish Craft Bursary which enables her to initiate the creation of an historical record of the techniques of former Waterford Crystal master engravers and cutters.

President Mary McAleese honours Irish Craftspeople

Members of Portfolio were guests of honour at a moving reception in Áras an Uachtaráin. Hosted by Mary McAleese, President of Ireland, this unique ceremony was held in recognition of the major contribution these artists have made to cultural life in Ireland. The afternoon of 6th June was infused with a sense of excitement as the craftspeople spilled into the Áras. Joined by their husbands, wives, parents, partners and friends, each artist met privately with the President and her husband Martin. Words of welcome, encouragement and praise were extended to each and every artist, making the meeting a very memorable one.

Úna Parsons appointed CEO of Crafts Council of Ireland

The Crafts Council of Ireland (CCoI) has announced the appointment of Úna Parsons as its incoming Chief Executive Officer. As CEO of the Crafts Council of Ireland, Parsons - who takes up her post in September - will be responsible for implementing the CCoI Strategic Plan 2007-2009 which is designed to equip the €122million Irish craft sector with the information and skills necessary to compete and prosper in a dynamic environment.

Adaptive Craft - A sell out show!

Jacare Jungle, the interactive dance performance for children aka the Adaptive Craft showcase event devised by textile artist Tara Carrigy for Kilkenny Arts Festival, was a runaway success. Tara was granted a research award by Crafts Council of Ireland and Dublin City University (DCU) in early 2006 to undertake a residency project at DCU exploring potential applications for smart
Jacare Jungle fabrics. In addition to developing her original concept of Smart Yoga Wearables, Tara also worked with Brazilian dance company Oficina da Capoeira to create Jacare Jungle especially for the festival.
