SÉAMUS GILL
SILVERSMITH
Séamus Gill is a Dublin based silversmith who has been working in silver for 30 years. He studied the art of silversmithing in a number of Irish Colleges in the 1980s then gained further experience working with silversmiths and jewellers in New York, USA and Toronto, Canada before setting up his own studio in Dublin, Ireland in 1988. Primarily a silversmith, more recently he has been creating sculptural pieces in sheet bronze, using the same techniques utilised in his silverwork. The surface of the bronze is patinated with muted colours.
Séamus Gill’s work is all about the joy of working directly with the material. All his work is hammered out of a flat sheet of metal using traditional age-old silversmithing skills. He exploits the malleability and the working qualities of the material, stretching and compressing the metal to move it into elegant three dimensional forms. He works in harmony with the natural movement of the material so his work is often compared to natural forms. Séamus has gained a growing international reputation, exhibiting his work at MAD - the Museum of Art and Design in New York, USA; The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show where he was the first non-American to be awarded the prestigious award for excellence in metals and at SOFA (Sculptural Objects and Functional Art) in New York and Chicago, USA.
In Europe he has exhibited in the Silver Triennial, the most important exhibition of European silversmithing which has travelled throughout Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands, and he has been a regular exhibitor in British Silver Week in the UK. For 2011 he has been selected as one of the Ten Masters of British Silver Week. As a silversmith he often works to commission and he has made many awards and presentation pieces. His work is in the Collections of the Department of Foreign affairs, Dublin, Ireland, the Company of Goldsmiths, Dublin, Ireland and the National Museum of Ireland as well as numerous private collections.
