PATRICIA MURPHY
TEXTILE ARTIST
Based in Blackrock, Co Louth, artist Patricia Murphy’s work is concerned with the emotional and transformational impact of colour on people and environments, which is conveyed throughout her work in the expression of abstract paintings, installations, wall-hangings and rugs. Murphy’s work is inspired by change and movement in the natural world and reflected in basic geometric forms used in an organic way.
Complementary colours, soft blurring lines and hard edges reveal Murphy’s fascination with contrasts and nature. Her choice of media is dependent on the work involved; she uses paint and mixed media on various surfaces ranging from fabric, acrylic sheeting, canvas and paper. Much of her smaller work is mixed media on silk which allows great spontaneity and vividness of colour. Murphy resists conventional use of dyes and has developed her own processes and style by building up multiple layers of colour, steam fixing between each layer, repainting and dyeing. In recent years she has started to add very low relief elements to the work by adding layers for emphasis and hard edges.
In 2007 Murphy was awarded first prize, an award she also received in 1998, of the Tufted Wall-Hangings/Rugs at the National Crafts Competition, Royal Dublin Society, Ireland. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in Galerie Sema, Paris, France; 100% Design, London, UK and in 2010 in the Lapua Art Museum, Finland.
Her work is held in a number of public and corporate collections and has been exhibited internationally, including London, Cologne, New York, Dubai, Finland and Paris.
