JACK DOHERTY

CERAMIST

On graduating from the Ulster College of Art and Design in 1971 ceramist Jack Doherty joined Kilkenny Design Workshops as a studio potter where he was involved in the production of prototypes and the development of glazes for industrial use.

Throughout his career Doherty has developed a style and process of working that continually strives towards simplicity while delivering deep and rich variations in colour and texture. The controlled clean purity of his work reflects an Asian sensibility of intent silence and oneness of thought. Doherty works with one porcelain clay, uses one slip and one single firing; through this singleness of purpose he is able to obtain a multi-layered depth of colour and emotion. His work has been exhibited extensively and consistently at an international level, commencing in 1974 at International Ceramics Exhibition Faenza, Italy, 1981; the Exhibition Form/ Design Centre, Maimo, Sweden, 1981; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK, 1994; and Galerie Paridis, Bornholm, Denmark 2006, in addition to many of other high profile exhibitions over the decades.

In 2010 Doherty’s work featured in exhibitions in Germany, Belfast, Warwickshire, Denmark and Japan ending with a solo exhibition at the National University Taipei, Taiwan. Doherty’s book Porcelain, was published in 2002 by A&C Black.
