LESLEY FREW
JEWELLER
Lesley Frew is a designer-maker based in Belfast. She graduated from the University of Ulster in 2007 and is currently on the ‘Making It’ programme run by Craft NI, with a studio space in the Ulster Museum, Belfast.
Frew creates contemporary jewellery using discarded plastic bags. Interested in ethical and sustainable making, she selects raw materials that would otherwise be destined for landfill and transforms them. Through a number of processes that include layering, heatbonding, cutting, folding and hand-stitching, the bags are transformed into a versatile material that is colourful, soft, lightweight and offers many design possibilities.
Innovative and contemporary, Frew confounds expectations by giving discarded material a new value and revealing its capacity for beauty.
