Artist statement
Glenn Lucas has always had two distinct strands to his woodturning business. Production turning and design-led pieces. As a production turner of salad bowls and fruit platters there are few turners that can match the efficency and high standard with which his workshop creates quality pieces for gift outlets in Ireland and America. Kilkenny Design Centre, the Bridge Gallery in Dublin and Simon Pearce Shops in the USA always have Glenn s pieces in stock. Using native Irish timbers sourced locally he fillets each tree to find the desired wood with the most beautiful grain patterns. Drying timber himself in his own kiln he then turns the piece and finishes it with natural oils. A truly self-sufficient business - even the resulting wood shavings go to a local fishmonger who uses them for smoking fish. Glenn is gaining a growing reputation as an innovative woodturner and metalturning with different forms that can be created using woodturning and metalturning lathes. This work tends to be highly sophisticated in form reflecting the purity of Japanese shapes. For these one off pieces he uses rare and exotic woods such as bog yew, purpleheart, cherry and maple. Sometimes he adds metal to the pieces in the form of a spine - this increases the feeling of tension in the curving piece and also shows a great understanding of engineering other materials to suit his design. Perhaps it also allows echoes of his cabinet maker training to emerge.
