Artist statement
I was drawn to basketmaking because I would be able to grow my own willow (the raw material for baskets) and I sensed that this involvment from growing through to making would prove deeply satisfying. This has indeed proved to be the case and over the last 27 years of basketmaking growing my own rods and sourcing several varieties with different qualities had profoundly influenced the way that I work. It has encouraged me to treat the material as abundant and I am never tempted to scrimp on willow, something there might have been danger of it I had to buy in all my supplies. The opportunity of live rurally and develop a real understanding for a particular place is also very important to me. Living in a spectacular location for 25 years has taught me that there is always more to learn about a place and the same is true of a basket tradition and even of a particular basket.
