Artist statement
All my wood working skills are self-taught, having learned a great deal from attending meetings held by the IWG, reading wood working books and magazines, viewing specialist woodworking videos/programmes, talking to other wood workers via internet forums and face-to-face, experimenting with new designs/materials, and entering C. C. O. I. Competitions. Being creative and experimenting with new ideas is what I enjoy doing most, whether it s designing and creating a box with an art deco influence, or incorporating new material such as corian into a box handle. My main aspiration is to gain a reputable name in the craft of box making and wood working in general. I would love to devote more time to my craft and start working on a full-time basis from home in a workshop that would be open to the public. My work has been inspired by the high quality of craftsmanship displayed in pieces viewed in galleries and on craft websites such as ccoi. Ie. I have also considered consumer trends towards more contemporary designs that incorporate metals and other unusual materials when designing new items. I continue to apply for opportunities provided by the Crafts Council including most recently Portfolio and the Hunt Museum Exhibition.
