Craft in the Classroom Programme & Teacher/ Maker Training

About Craft in the Classroom
Based on the six strands of drawing, paint & colour, priint, clay, construction and fabric and fibre, as outlined in the revised Visual Arts Curriculum, Craft in the Classroom uses a process-led methodology that focuses on the child's own creativity.

The core programme takes place in the spring term over twelve contact hours, which are timetabled into sessions to suit both schools craftspeople. During this period the projects are supported and visited by representatives from the Crafts Council. The programme culminates in a closure day where craftspeople and teachers involved in the programme come together to present their projects, share their experience and swop ideas.

Craft in the Classroom

Training for Crafts People & Teachers
The overall aim of the programme is to establish principles based on this methodology when setting up working partnerships between craftspeople and classroom teachers. In order to create this partnership both craftspeople and teachers attend training workshops on planning and facilitating arts educational projects. Strong emphasis is placed on the importance of close collaboration between the teacher and the craftsperson both in the planning stages and the facilitation of the programme, this has proved highly beneficial to the quality of the project.

•    Introductory information days for teachers and craftspeople wishing to learn more about the programme.
•    Child Protection training for craftspeople selected to take part in the programme.
•    Training and collaborative planning time, which take place on Saturdays in early January.

Between the training workshops, craftspeople visit their designated schools and facilitate a two-hour introductory session, with the aim of introducing the students to the basic concepts of their craft and familiarising themselves with the school environment. These sessions are then evaluated and shared at the following training workshop and have proved invaluable when planning the main project.
